Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Please let us know how you would like to see this module enhanced - perhaps it could be extended to monitor User Referrals with some sort of "reward" system? It's up to you!

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Future of Referrals  (United States)

I just installed the referrals module for a client.

They indicated that they would like to see a simpler version available. Specifics include a straight text box for message entry (less overwhelming to an unsophisticated user) and the ability to eliminate the 'header' and 'footer' boxes entirely. The width of the text box should also be configurable. Finally, they felt the 'send' link should be a more visible send button.

I suspect that these things could be modified from the source, but I am only just beginning to look at dotnet code work. I have been working almost exclusively in ColdFusion until now, so I have a bit of a learning curve ahead of me.

Just wanted to pass along those thoughts from a client.

Hello

Thanks for the suggestions!

We have to treat our subscriber requests as highest priority, but I have added them to the Referrals To Do list for consideration when the next cycle of development starts for this module.

Re: Future of Referrals  (United States)

The sole intent of using the module would be to reward existing users, through a contest for example, to bring in new members. I have downloaded but not yet installed the module. Currently, can the admin go into the sql tables and see you had sent referrals?

My vision would be to generate some kind of referral code that the recipient could enter on a customized UCanUse registration form. Now, when the new user registers, I have the user reg info in hand and the referrer code in the same table struct.

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Hello Buck

We definitely are on the same track with the future of this module - I wanted it to be used to track referrals etc.
The problem is that it was not as popular as I was hoping it would be and there has been very little demand for this module (and the concept I was pushing for). This unfortunately means I have to put this on the back-burner and concentrate on the more popular modules. Obviously if there was more demand for it I could have another look at it and we could brainstorm a spec of how it would work, but I can't see this happening to be honest...

So as it stands it really is just a very simple "Refer a Friend" module...

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Future of Referrals  (Greenland)

Hi!

I have been looking for a referral module. Then I installed this on DNN 4.3.4. It's working. I had a reward/contest referral in my mind.

Now I use your module to get members to referrer new users to become members. I could use this idea "reward referrer".

If it is not too much, I could use the e-mail inside the e-mail to admin. With this I can track new users, where they get the referrer from.

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Hi Ulrik,

I had quite big plans for this module (to use it as a Referral tracking module) but no one seemed to need it so it's been on the backburner. To be honest there are 101 other updates needed on the other modules so I can't see this module evolving much more for the next 6 months or so - it is really just a "Tell a Friend" module at the moment.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Future of Referrals  (Netherlands)
Apparently I'm one of the few needing a referral module ;-)

  • I really need a very simple tell a friend, can I disable the rich text editor and other user input features?
  • Is user input filtered etc. to prevent email injection?
  • Do I need to purchase the complete suite, I just need the referral module?
  • I don't have db_owner role to the ms sql 2000 db, only db_datareader, db_datawriter, db_ddladmin and db_securityadmin, so I changed databaseOwner in web.config to my db login username. I'm also running in medium trust/CAS. Willl this work?
  • What's the amount of strings that need to be translated?
  • If discontinue the module, are there any other referral modules you would advice?

Thanks in advance

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Hi there,

Well the good news is that the Referrals module is not being deprecated, but it is really just more of a Tell a Friend module than a referral tracking module.
The other bit of good news is that the new version is finished in dev and undergoing testing (I've had to delay releasing it as I am working on the Events update).

The new version allows you to simplify it right down to a single email address field only! There are module settings for the number of Friend tetxboxes, whether you want names and emails, whether to show the subject and message box etc. so it's very flexible. My requirements are to have the module after the Registration page with 5 Friend emails boxes only, and then to have a more complex Tell a Friend page, and with the new version this is now possible. I'm going to try and release this in the next 3 weeks.

Looking at your questions:

1) Yes, this is possible in the new version.
2) Hmmm - can you elaborate on this point so I can ensure it is secure?
3) No, we have single module licensing, but it's really much better value to purchase the entire suite. This module wont change for a while probably, so you could buy the Silver Suite for $49 and get ALL the modules (with updates for 2 months) with this as part of it. Single Product Licensing is not drastically cheaper than that (but you do getall updates for a year).
4) Is this more of a general DNN question? The module will work under medium trust, but I am not sure of the DB Owner change - if the rest of DNN works then there is a 99% chance that this module will as it is not overly complex and has no DB layer.
5) Minimal - about 30 including the settings pages. What language will you be converting to out of interest?
6) Nope - it's back in the Smart-Thinker Product Suite ;)

I'll try and increase the priority because I also want to get this version out with a Trial Download.

Thanks
Rodney

From email:

Hi,

Thanks for the quick support, that's a good sign ;-)

2) Hmmm - can you elaborate on this point so I can ensure it is secure?
>  Here's an link in english, it's about php, but asp is also sensitive for it, I don't know exactly if and if so how asp.net is vulnerable.  http://www.securephpwiki.com/index.php/Email_Injection If you do proper input testing you can avoid it. I'll get back to you on this subject

> some modules don't comply with the dnn module review guidelines and have dbo hardcoded in their sql scripts, this will not work ig you're not actually
are dbo. But since you don't have a db layer I don't think it will be a problem ;-)

5) Minimal - about 30 including the settings pages. What language will you be converting to out of interest?
> Dutch

Only problem is that I need it tomorrow (I know, should have looked earlier, but I thought this was such a default module it would e available...). I'm considering purchasing the current version.

Thanks!

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Hi Rutger,

2) Ok - I will take a look at that link - thanks. I do do some input testing and use encoding on certain input fields, but I want to investigate this in more detail.

4) Oh, I see now - yes all modules follow the DNN guidelines in that regard anyway.

Hmm - are you a developer? I could consider giving you the source code if you bought the Gold Product Suite (non-dev version) but it would be in an As-Is state. I am almost finished testing it but you would need to compile and package it (and let me know if you encounter any oddities ;)

Otherwise I will try and get this out in the next 2 weeks (upped priority - I don't think that there is much work left but I am working on Events at the mo)

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)

Hi Rod,

Is it possible to parse in the subject of the email via a link?

Eg.... mysite.com/Referral/tabid/71/subject/subject-text/Default.aspx

I know you can set the subject in settings, but I want to use this in a way that it can pick up tokens, e.g.

mysite.com/Referral/tabid/71/subject/[SUBJECT-TEXT]/Default.aspx

Thanks,

Anna

Re: Future of Referrals  (United Kingdom)
Hi Anna,

No, this is not currently possible. It would not be hard to do - maybe half a days work - the problem is it will be a long time before I work on the Referrals module again as there are not many other requirements.

I did have some ideas for it actually - I wanted to use AJAX more, and better templating (more like UserProfiles) and then be able to pass a"type" into it - so for example, on PokerDIY,  I could have a button on an Event, Group and League saying - Tell a Friend about this Event etc. and it uses a template for that type.

This would be a rewrite basically - but it is a cool idea!

Thanks
Rodney
